It combines the two section scores using a configurable weighting, since most AP exams split scoring evenly between the two formats but some, such as AP English courses, weight the free-response section more heavily. The result is a rough estimated score along with the underlying composite percentage.

How It Works

Three inputs are used: the percentage score on the multiple-choice section, the percentage score on the free-response section, and the weight assigned to the multiple-choice section, with the remainder automatically applied to free-response. The calculator combines the two section percentages into a single weighted composite percentage, then compares that composite against a set of score thresholds to estimate the final AP score from 1 to 5.
