About the Race Time Predictor
This calculator predicts a runner's finish time at a new race distance using a recent result at a different distance, applying the Riegel formula developed by Pete Riegel in 1977. It is built for runners who have a known time from one race and want a realistic target for an upcoming race at a longer or shorter distance.
How It Works
The user enters a known race distance in miles, the time taken to complete it in minutes, and a target distance to predict. The calculator applies the Riegel formula, which scales the known time by the ratio of target to known distance raised to the power of 1.06, then also generates a reference table showing predicted times for 5K, 10K, half marathon, and marathon distances using the same known result.
Formula & Methodology
To calculate by hand, divide the target distance by the known distance, raise that ratio to the power of 1.06, and multiply the result by the known time. The 1.06 exponent, rather than 1.0, accounts for the fact that pace naturally slows somewhat as distance increases, so a simple linear scaling of pace would overestimate performance at longer distances.
Examples
5K to Half Marathon
A runner completes a 5-mile race in 45 minutes and wants a half marathon (13.1 mi) prediction. T2 = 45 x (13.1 / 5)^1.06, which comes out to roughly 133.6 minutes, or about 2:13:36.
10K to Marathon
A runner finishes a 10K (6.21 mi) in 50 minutes and wants a marathon (26.2 mi) prediction. T2 = 50 x (26.2 / 6.21)^1.06, which comes out to roughly 224.6 minutes, or about 3:44:36.
Advantages
- Uses a well-established, widely cited endurance formula rather than a simple linear pace extrapolation.
- Automatically produces predictions for four common race distances (5K, 10K, half marathon, marathon) from a single known result, not just the one target distance entered.
- Gives both a predicted total finish time and a predicted per-mile pace, useful for setting race-day pacing targets.
Common Mistakes
- Using a training run or a poorly-paced race as the 'known' time, when the formula assumes the known result reflects a genuine, well-executed race effort.
- Predicting a distance far removed from the known one, such as projecting a marathon from a 5K, where endurance and fueling factors the short race never tested become decisive.
- Treating the predicted time as a guaranteed outcome rather than a statistical estimate that doesn't account for course terrain, weather, or training changes between races.
Edge Cases to Watch For
- If either the known or target distance is zero or negative, the calculator returns an error since the ratio D2/D1 is undefined or meaningless in that case.
- The formula becomes less reliable the further apart the known and target distances are, since a short race like a 5K does not test the endurance and fueling demands that determine marathon performance.
- The predicted pace figure divides the predicted time by the target distance directly, so it assumes even pacing across the whole target race rather than accounting for pacing strategy, terrain, or fatigue late in a race.
