About the Cumulative GPA Calculator

The Cumulative GPA Calculator blends a student's existing cumulative GPA with a newly completed semester's GPA to produce an updated overall GPA. It is built for students who already track a running GPA and just finished a term, rather than someone computing a GPA from scratch off individual course grades.

How It Works

You enter your current cumulative GPA and the total credit hours behind it, then the new semester's GPA and its credit hours. The calculator converts each GPA back into grade points by multiplying by its credit hours, adds the two point totals together, and divides by the combined credit hours to get the new cumulative GPA.

Formula & Methodology

By hand: multiply your current GPA by your prior credit total to recover total quality points earned so far. Do the same for the new semester (new GPA times new credits). Add both point totals, then divide by the sum of all credits, current plus new. The result is rounded to three decimal places in the output.

A student with a 3.4 GPA over 60 credits earns a 3.8 GPA in a 15-credit semester. Total points are (3.4 x 60) + (3.8 x 15) = 204 + 57 = 261, divided by 75 total credits, giving a new cumulative GPA of 3.480.

Small credit load, big GPA gap

A student with a 3.0 GPA over 90 credits takes just 3 credits and earns a 4.0. Points are (3.0 x 90) + (4.0 x 3) = 270 + 12 = 282, divided by 93 credits, for a new cumulative GPA of 3.032 - only a small bump despite the perfect term, because the credit load was tiny relative to the existing 90.
