How It Works
Unlike length or weight, temperature scales have different zero points, so conversions require both a multiplication and an addition or subtraction step. The calculator converts your input to Celsius internally first, then applies the correct formula to reach your target scale.
Formula & Methodology
Celsius and Fahrenheit don't just use different-sized degrees, they also start counting from different points: Celsius sets 0° at water's freezing point, while Fahrenheit sets 32° there. The 9/5 (or 1.8) multiplier accounts for the different degree sizes - a Fahrenheit degree is smaller, so covering the same real temperature change takes more of them (180 Fahrenheit degrees span the same range as 100 Celsius degrees between freezing and boiling). The +32 then shifts the result to line up with Fahrenheit's different starting point.
Kelvin avoids this offset problem entirely by starting at absolute zero - the coldest physically possible temperature, where 0 K equals −273.15°C. Because Kelvin uses the same degree size as Celsius, converting between them is pure addition or subtraction, with no multiplication needed.

- Some older international recipes and scientific texts use Réaumur degrees, a largely obsolete scale this calculator doesn't cover.
