About the Customer Lifetime Value

The Customer Lifetime Value calculator estimates how much revenue and profit an average customer generates over their entire relationship with a business, using average order value, purchase frequency, and expected customer lifespan. Adding a gross margin and an optional acquisition cost turns that estimate into a profit figure and, when available, an LTV to CAC ratio that shows whether acquisition spending is paying off.

How It Works

You enter average order value, purchases per year, average customer lifespan in years, gross margin as a percentage, and optionally customer acquisition cost. The calculator multiplies order value by purchase frequency by lifespan to get revenue-based CLV, then multiplies that by gross margin to get profit-based CLV, subtracts CAC to show profit net of acquisition cost, and if CAC is greater than zero, divides profit-based CLV by CAC to produce an LTV to CAC ratio.

Formula & Methodology

By hand, start by multiplying average order value by how many times a typical customer purchases per year, which gives annual revenue per customer. Multiply that by the average number of years a customer stays active to get total revenue-based CLV over the relationship. Apply gross margin (entered as a percentage and converted to a decimal) to convert that revenue figure into a profit-based CLV, since revenue alone overstates what a customer is actually worth to the business. If an acquisition cost is available, subtract it from profit-based CLV to see net profit per customer after the cost of winning them, and divide profit-based CLV by CAC to get the LTV to CAC ratio, calculated only when CAC is greater than zero.

A store has a $60 average order value, 4 purchases per year, a 3-year average lifespan, and a 40% gross margin. Revenue CLV = $60 x 4 x 3 = $720. Profit CLV = $720 x 0.40 = $288. With a $50 CAC, net profit is $288 - $50 = $238, and the LTV:CAC ratio is $288 / $50 = 5.76:1.

Lower-margin, higher-frequency business

A meal kit service has a $45 average order, 12 purchases per year, a 1.5-year average lifespan, and a 25% gross margin. Revenue CLV = $45 x 12 x 1.5 = $810. Profit CLV = $810 x 0.25 = $202.50.
