How It Works

The calculator converts weight to kilograms, computes the resting energy requirement, multiplies it by the selected life-stage factor to get a daily energy requirement, and divides that by the calorie density to produce cups per day.
Formula & Methodology
To calculate by hand, convert pounds to kilograms by multiplying by 0.453592, raise that kilogram figure to the 0.75 power, and multiply by 70 to get RER. Multiply RER by the life-stage factor shown in the dropdown, 1.2 for weight loss up to 3.0 for puppies under four months, to get DER.
