About the Carbon Footprint
This calculator estimates a household's annual carbon dioxide output from the three energy sources that dominate most home footprints: grid electricity, vehicle driving, and natural gas heating. It's built for anyone who wants a quick, numeric sense of their environmental impact from everyday energy use rather than a full lifestyle audit covering diet, flights, or purchased goods.
How It Works
You enter monthly electricity use in kWh, annual vehicle mileage, and (optionally) monthly natural gas use in therms. Each input is multiplied by a fixed emission factor and summed into a single annual total, then broken out by source in a donut chart so you can see which category drives your footprint the most.
Formula & Methodology
The 0.3878 kg/kWh figure is the EPA's national average grid emission factor, 0.404 kg/mile is the EPA's average passenger vehicle factor, and 5.31 kg/therm is the EPA's natural gas combustion factor. Because these are fixed multipliers, the calculator does hand-arithmetic scaling rather than any lookup or regional adjustment - multiply monthly figures by 12 to annualize, then apply the per-unit factor.
Examples
Typical suburban household
At 900 kWh/month electricity, 12,000 miles/year of driving, and 50 therms/month of gas, the totals come to about 4.19 tons from electricity, 4.85 tons from the vehicle, and 3.19 tons from gas, for roughly 12.2 metric tons CO2 per year.
All-electric, low-mileage household
With 700 kWh/month, 6,000 miles/year, and no natural gas, electricity contributes about 3.26 tons and driving about 2.42 tons, for a total near 5.7 metric tons CO2 per year - illustrating how cutting mileage and gas use compounds quickly.

Edge Cases to Watch For
- The natural gas field is optional and marked advanced, so an all-electric home can leave it at zero without distorting the total
- A local grid that's cleaner or dirtier than the US national average (more hydro/nuclear vs. more coal) will make the electricity portion over- or under-stated, since the factor is fixed rather than regional
- The three inputs cover common household energy use only - diet, air travel, and consumer goods are excluded entirely, so this is a partial footprint, not a full lifestyle one
