About the Tile Calculator
Tile is one of the few materials where the waste allowance can matter as much as the base area, since cut pieces around a room's edges rarely reuse cleanly for the next row.
How It Works
The calculator converts your chosen tile size from square inches to square feet, divides your total room area by that figure to get a base tile count, then adds your waste percentage on top.
Examples
A standard bathroom floor
A 12×10 ft room with 12×12 in tiles (144 sq in) and 10% waste needs about 132 tiles.
Switching to a larger format
The same room using 18×18 in tiles (324 sq in) needs only about 59 tiles, fewer pieces but a higher cost per unit typically offsets some of that savings.

Common Mistakes

Edge Cases to Watch For
- Diagonal layouts and herringbone patterns produce more cut waste than a straight grid, so bumping the waste allowance to 15-20% is common for those patterns.
- Large-format tiles reduce the number of grout lines, but any single miscut wastes a proportionally more expensive piece, so extra care, and maybe a slightly higher allowance, pays off.
- This calculates a flat floor or wall area; it doesn't separately account for tile needed to wrap a tub surround or stepped shower niche.
