Every one of these formulas ultimately answers the same question - how many unit squares fit inside the shape - but each shape's geometry requires a different specific calculation to find that count. A rectangle's area is length times width because it tiles perfectly into that many unit squares; a triangle's area is half of the equivalent rectangle (base times height), since any triangle is exactly half of a parallelogram with the same base and height; a circle's area uses π because it has no straight sides to tile directly, requiring the radius-squared relationship instead.

Edge Cases to Watch For
- A square is a special case of a rectangle where both dimensions are equal - either formula produces the same result for a true square.

- For a circle, entering diameter instead of radius (without converting first) would produce a result four times too large, since the formula specifically requires radius.
- All area results are in square units - multiplying two linear measurements always produces an area unit, not a linear one.
