Asphalt driveways and parking areas are ordered by weight, not volume, which trips up anyone used to thinking of paving jobs in square feet or cubic yards - the conversion runs through the material's density.
How It Works
The calculator converts your footprint and depth into cubic feet, then multiplies by a typical hot-mix asphalt density of 145 lb per cubic foot and divides by 2,000 to convert pounds to tons, the unit asphalt suppliers actually quote and deliver by.
Examples
A residential driveway
A 50×15 ft driveway at 3 inches deep needs about 8.16 tons of hot-mix asphalt, based on 187.5 cubic feet of volume.
A thinner overlay
The same footprint resurfaced with a 1.5-inch overlay needs roughly half the tonnage, about 4.08 tons, since volume scales directly with depth.
