About the Backpacking Food Weight
This calculator estimates how much food, by weight, a backpacker needs to pack for a multi-day trip, based on daily calorie needs and how calorie-dense the chosen food is. It helps hikers plan pack weight before they hit the trail rather than guessing and over- or under-packing.
How It Works
You enter the trip length in days, the calories needed per day, and the calorie density of the planned food in calories per ounce. The calculator multiplies days by daily calories to get total calories needed, then divides that by the calorie density to get total ounces, converting to pounds at the end.
Examples
A 5-day trip at 2,800 calories per day
Total calories needed are 5 * 2800 = 14,000. At 120 cal/oz, that's 14,000/120 = 116.7 oz, or 116.7/16 = 7.3 lb of food total, roughly 1.46 lb per day.
A 3-day trip with denser food
At 2,500 calories per day for 3 days, total calories are 7,500. Using a denser 130 cal/oz mix, total ounces are 7500/130 = 57.7 oz, or about 3.6 lb total, roughly 1.2 lb per day.

Common Mistakes
- Using a single calorie-density figure for a mixed food bag that actually contains both dense and bulky, water-heavy items, which skews the total.
- Underestimating daily calorie needs for strenuous multi-day trips, which flows directly into an undersized total food weight.
- Forgetting that this is dry food weight only and doesn't include packaging, cooking fuel, or other trip supplies that add to total pack weight.
Edge Cases to Watch For
- Calorie density is floored at a minimum of 1 cal/oz, preventing a division-by-zero or negative-weight result if the field is left blank or set to zero.
- The weight-per-day figure divides by the trip days with a minimum of 1, so a zero-day trip input won't produce a division error in that secondary calculation.
- The tool assumes a constant calorie density across all food carried; mixing high-density and low-density items would need a blended average entered manually for an accurate total.
