About the Baseboard Calculator
Baseboard trim runs around a room's perimeter, but not across every gap - doorways interrupt the run, and forgetting to subtract them is the easiest way to over-order.
How It Works
The calculator finds the room's perimeter from length and width, subtracts the width of doorway openings you specify, adds a waste allowance for cuts and miters, then divides by the length of a single board to estimate how many pieces to buy.
Examples
A standard bedroom
A 14×12 ft room has a 52 ft perimeter; subtracting a 3 ft doorway and adding 10% waste needs about 53.9 ft of baseboard, or 7 pieces of 8 ft board.
A room with two openings
The same room with a closet opening added (5 ft total doorway width subtracted) needs only about 51.7 ft, slightly less material.

Edge Cases to Watch For
- Every doorway or opening should be subtracted, not just the main entrance - closets, hallway openings, and any spot where flooring transitions to another room all break the baseboard run.
- Rooms with bay windows, closets, or irregular jogs in the wall have more perimeter (and more corner cuts) than a simple rectangle of the same floor area, so measure the actual wall run rather than estimating from floor dimensions alone.
- Inside and outside corners both consume a small amount of extra length for the miter cuts, which is part of why a 10% waste allowance is standard rather than cutting exactly to the calculated perimeter.
