About the Net Rating Calculator
The Basketball Net Rating calculator converts points scored, points allowed, and total possessions into offensive rating, defensive rating, and net rating, all expressed per 100 possessions. How It Works
Enter points scored, points allowed, and the number of possessions played. The calculator divides points scored by possessions and multiplies by 100 to get offensive rating, does the same with points allowed for defensive rating, and subtracts defensive rating from offensive rating to get net rating.
Formula & Methodology
Scaling to possessions rather than games removes the effect of pace: a team that plays fast naturally racks up more raw points scored and allowed than a slow-paced team, even if neither is more efficient. Expressing both scoring and points allowed per 100 possessions makes offensive and defensive rating directly comparable regardless of how many possessions the two teams played. Net rating, the difference between the two, gives a single number for point differential on a possession-adjusted basis: positive means the team outscored opponents per possession, negative means the opposite.
Examples
Slightly Positive Game
A team that scores 108 points and allows 102 across 98 possessions produces an offensive rating of about 110.2, a defensive rating of about 104.1, and a net rating of about +6.1.
Negative Rating in a Short Stint
A lineup that scores 40 points and allows 48 over 40 possessions has an offensive rating of 100.0, a defensive rating of 120.0, and a net rating of -20.0, showing how a rough short stretch produces a much larger swing than a full-game sample would.

- The tool does not calculate or estimate possessions itself, so the accuracy of the ratings depends entirely on how the possession count was derived elsewhere.
- A very small possession sample, such as a single quarter or a short lineup stint, can produce ratings that swing widely and should not be treated as a stable long-run rate.
