How It Works
You enter a wind speed in miles per hour, and the calculator checks it against a fixed table of 13 force levels (0 through 12), each defined by an upper speed threshold, returning the first level whose maximum the entered speed doesn't exceed, along with that level's descriptive name.
Formula & Methodology
The table is checked in ascending order of force, and the calculator returns the first level whose maximum speed is greater than or equal to the entered value; if the speed exceeds every listed threshold (above 72 mph), it falls into Force 12, Hurricane force, which has no upper bound. This means a reading of exactly 24 mph, for example, lands in Force 5 (Fresh breeze) rather than Force 6, since 24 is the stated maximum for Force 5.
Examples
A moderate breeze
A wind speed of 25 mph exceeds Force 5's 24 mph maximum, so it's classified as Force 6, 'Strong breeze', the next level up whose maximum (31 mph) the reading doesn't exceed.
A calm reading
A wind speed of 0.5 mph falls at or below Force 0's 1 mph maximum, so it's classified as Force 0, 'Calm'.

- Negative or zero wind speeds are still matched against the scale and would fall into Force 0 (Calm), since there's no explicit lower-bound validation in the matching logic.
