Muscle tissue is metabolically active and burns meaningfully more calories at rest than fat tissue does, which is why a formula based on lean mass rather than total weight can better reflect metabolic rate for people whose body composition differs notably from average. By first stripping out estimated fat mass and then applying a coefficient calibrated specifically to lean tissue's calorie cost, Katch-McArdle avoids the built-in assumption in weight-based formulas like Mifflin-St Jeor that two people of the same total weight have roughly similar body composition.
Step-by-Step: Calculating It By Hand
