About the Body Adiposity Index

How It Works
The calculator divides hip circumference (in meters) by height (in meters) raised to the power of 1.5, then subtracts 18 - the BAI formula, designed specifically to estimate body fat percentage across different populations without needing a scale.
Formula & Methodology
BAI was developed and published in 2011 by researchers specifically searching for a body fat estimator that didn't require a scale, reasoning that hip circumference relative to height could serve as a useful proxy for adiposity across different populations. The unusual height^1.5 exponent (rather than height² as in BMI) was empirically chosen because it produced the best statistical fit against directly measured body fat percentage in the validation study's reference population.
Step-by-Step: Calculating It By Hand
- 1Measure hip circumference at its widest point, in meters.
- 2Convert height to meters and raise it to the power of 1.5.
- 3Divide hip circumference by that result.
- 4Subtract 18 from the result for the estimated BAI.

A hip circumference of 38 inches (0.97 m) and height of 5'8" (1.73 m) produces a BAI estimate reflecting an approximate body fat percentage.
Why it skips weight
Because BAI doesn't use weight at all, it can sometimes differ meaningfully from BMI-based body fat estimates, particularly for people with body compositions that don't fit typical assumptions.
