About the Bone Mass Percentage

How It Works

Enter your weight in kilograms, height in centimeters, and sex. The calculator applies one of two different regression formulas depending on sex, since the male and female versions weight body weight and height differently, then divides the resulting bone mass figure by total body weight to express it as a percentage.

Male: bone mass (kg) = 0.05158 x weight (kg) x height (m) - 0.5. Female: bone mass (kg) = 0.245691 x weight (kg) - 0.1247 x height (cm) + 5.63. The result is floored at a minimum of 0.5 kg, and percentage of body weight = (bone mass / weight) x 100.

Formula & Methodology

For the male formula, convert height to meters first, so 170cm becomes 1.7m, multiply by weight and the 0.05158 coefficient, then subtract 0.5. For the female formula, height stays in centimeters: multiply weight by 0.245691, subtract the product of height and 0.1247, then add 5.63.

Converting height to 1.7m and applying the male formula gives 0.05158 x 70 x 1.7 - 0.5 = 5.64 kg of estimated bone mass, about 8.1% of the 70kg body weight.

Applying the female formula gives 0.245691 x 68 - 0.1247 x 160 + 5.63 = 2.38 kg of estimated bone mass, about 3.5% of the 68kg body weight.
