How It Works

Enter the cake's diameter in inches, how many layers it has, and whether you want full frost-and-fill coverage or just a crumb coat. The calculator converts diameter into the cake's circular surface area, then multiplies that area by a coverage rate, a higher rate for full frosting and a much lower one for a thin crumb coat. When full coverage is selected, it adds an extra allowance for filling spread between each pair of layers, scaled to the number of layers above one.

Area (sq in) = pi x (diameter / 2)^2. Base frosting (cups) = Area x 0.012 for full coverage, or Area x 0.005 for a crumb coat only. Filling (cups, full coverage only) = (layers - 1) x (Area / diameter) x 0.15. Total frosting = base frosting + filling.

Formula & Methodology

To work this out by hand, square half the diameter and multiply by pi to get the round area in square inches, a 9-inch cake works out to about 63.6 square inches. For full coverage, multiply that area by 0.012 cups per square inch for the outer coat, then separately multiply the area by 0.15 and divide by the diameter to get a per-layer filling estimate, multiplying that by one fewer than the number of layers before adding it to the outer coat total.

Examples

9-inch, two-layer cake, full coverage

A standard 9-inch round cake with 2 layers works out to roughly 63.6 square inches of surface area. Full coverage needs about 0.76 cups for the outer coat plus roughly 1.06 cups of filling between the two layers, for a total near 1.8 cups of buttercream.

12-inch, three-layer cake, full coverage

A larger 12-inch cake with 3 layers has about 113.1 square inches of area. The outer coat needs roughly 1.36 cups, and the two filling layers add about 2.83 cups, bringing the total to around 4.2 cups, more than double the 9-inch example despite the diameter only growing by a third.
