About the Priming Sugar
Bottle-conditioned homebrew gets its carbonation from a second, controlled fermentation inside the sealed bottle, fueled by a small measured amount of priming sugar added just before bottling, and getting that amount right is the difference between a well-carbonated beer and a flat or dangerously overcarbonated one.
How It Works
Enter the batch size and the target corn sugar amount per gallon, and the calculator multiplies the two together to find the total priming sugar needed for the whole batch, also converting the result to approximate cups.
Examples
A standard 5-gallon batch
5 gallons at the default 30g per gallon needs 150g of corn sugar (dextrose), about 0.75 cups, dissolved in boiling water before adding to the batch.
A smaller batch with higher target carbonation
2.5 gallons at 40g per gallon (a Belgian-style target) needs 100g of priming sugar, scaled up from the standard ale rate to reach the style's higher expected carbonation.

Edge Cases to Watch For
- The default of 30 grams per gallon targets moderate carbonation typical of standard ales; Belgian styles and wheat beers are often carbonated higher, while traditional British ales are often carbonated lower, so the per-gallon rate should shift with the style being brewed.
- Priming sugar should always be dissolved in a small amount of boiling water before mixing into the full batch, both for even distribution and to make sure it's fully dissolved rather than settling unevenly at the bottling bucket.
- Using more priming sugar than intended risks overcarbonation, which can cause excessive foaming, gushing when a bottle is opened, or in extreme cases bottle bombs, so weighing sugar precisely matters far more here than in most cooking applications.
