How It Works
You enter the round-trip distance, the vehicle's fuel economy in miles per gallon, the current gas price per gallon, and the number of riders including the driver. The calculator first works out how many gallons the trip burns and multiplies that by the gas price to get a total cost, then divides that total evenly across every rider.
Formula & Methodology
For a 60-mile round trip in a car getting 28 mpg with gas at $3.50 a gallon: gallons used = 60 / 28 = 2.143, total cost = 2.143 x $3.50 = $7.50. Splitting that across 3 riders gives $7.50 / 3 = $2.50 per person, the amount each rider owes for that trip.

- The split is always even by default and doesn't automatically discount the driver for vehicle wear or the effort of driving, an intentional design choice since conventions on this vary by group; adjust the rider count if your group prefers a different arrangement.
