About the Cat Protein Requirement
This calculator estimates a cat's daily protein need in grams, starting from body weight and life stage rather than food volume alone. It is aimed at owners comparing foods by protein content per calorie, or formulating a raw or home-prepared diet, who need a target grams-per-day figure to build against.
How It Works
Enter the cat's weight in pounds and select adult maintenance or kitten growth as the life stage. The calculator first computes Resting Energy Requirement from weight, scales it to Daily Energy Requirement using a life-stage factor, then applies a grams-of-protein-per-1000-kcal figure, higher for growth than maintenance, to that DER to output an estimated daily protein target in grams.
Formula & Methodology
By hand: convert pounds to kilograms by multiplying by 0.453592, raise that to the 0.75 power and multiply by 70 for RER, multiply by 1.2 (adult) or 2.5 (kitten) for DER, divide DER by 1000, then multiply by 50 (adult) or 75 (kitten) for the protein figure in grams.
Examples
10 lb adult cat
RER is about 218 kcal/day, scaled to a DER of about 261 kcal/day at the 1.2 adult factor. At 50g protein per 1000 kcal, that comes to roughly 13g of protein per day.
3 lb kitten
RER is only about 88 kcal/day, scaled to a DER of about 220 kcal/day at the 2.5 growth factor. At 75g protein per 1000 kcal, that comes to roughly 17g of protein per day, more than the adult cat despite the kitten's much lower RER.
