Formula & Methodology

To work this out by hand: convert body weight from pounds to kilograms by multiplying by 0.453592, then multiply by 50 to get total daily fluid need in milliliters. Multiply that total by the moisture share for the diet type (0.10 for dry, 0.70 for wet, 0.40 for mixed) to find the portion already coming from food, then subtract it from the total to isolate the drinking water requirement. Divide any milliliter figure by 29.5735 to express it in fluid ounces.
