About the Century Ride Pacing
The Century Ride Pacing Calculator turns a goal finish time for a 100-mile or 100-kilometer ride into the average speed you need to hold, plus a table of distance and elapsed-time checkpoints along the way. It is built for cyclists planning or tracking progress on an imperial or metric century.
How It Works
Choose whether you are riding an imperial century (100 miles) or metric century (100 kilometers), then enter your goal finish time in hours. The calculator divides the fixed 100-unit distance by your goal hours to get a required average speed, then splits the ride into quarter, half, three-quarter, and full-distance checkpoints, showing the distance and elapsed time expected at each one under an even pace.
Formula & Methodology
Both ride types use a fixed distance of 100 units, miles for imperial and kilometers for metric, so the required average speed is simply that distance divided by your goal hours. For the checkpoint table, the calculator takes four fractions of the total distance, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%, multiplies each by 100 to get the checkpoint distance, and multiplies your goal hours (converted to minutes) by the same fraction to get the elapsed time expected at that checkpoint, assuming a perfectly even pace throughout.
Examples
A 6-Hour Imperial Century
For a 100-mile ride with a 6-hour goal, required average speed is 100 / 6, about 16.7 mi/h, and the checkpoints fall at 25 miles by 1:30 elapsed, 50 miles by 3:00, 75 miles by 4:30, and the full 100 miles by 6:00.
A 5-Hour Metric Century
For a 100-kilometer ride with a 5-hour goal, required average speed is 100 / 5, exactly 20 km/h, with checkpoints at 25 km by 1:15 elapsed, 50 km by 2:30, 75 km by 3:45, and 100 km by 5:00.

Common Mistakes
- Treating the checkpoint elapsed times as moving-time targets, when the average speed and checkpoints are based on total goal hours, which includes any stops, not just time spent pedaling.
- Assuming a dead-even pace is realistic for the whole distance, when most riders slow somewhat in the final quarter, so the flat checkpoint splits may need padding for a realistic pacing plan.
- Selecting the wrong ride type for the course being planned, since choosing metric when the actual event is measured in miles, or vice versa, applies the 100-unit distance to the wrong measurement system.
Edge Cases to Watch For
- A goal time of zero or less returns an error, since average speed cannot be calculated over zero or negative hours.
- The distance used is always exactly 100 miles or 100 kilometers depending on the ride type selected, so if your actual mapped course is slightly longer or shorter than a true century, the checkpoint distances will not line up exactly with your course's own mile or kilometer markers.
- Checkpoint splits assume a dead-even pace across the full distance and elapsed time you enter; they do not build in extra time for rest stops, food breaks, or the fatigue-driven slowdown many riders experience in the final quarter.
