About the Egg Production Rate
The Chicken Egg Production Rate Calculator computes hen-day production rate, the standard poultry-industry measure of how well a flock is laying relative to its size and the time period observed. It lets backyard and small-scale keepers track laying performance the same way commercial operations benchmark flocks, rather than eyeballing whether egg counts 'feel' normal.
How It Works
Enter the total number of eggs collected, the number of hens in the flock, and the number of days over which those eggs were collected. The calculator multiplies hens by days to get total hen-days, divides eggs collected by that figure, and expresses the result as a percentage.
Formula & Methodology
By hand: multiply the number of hens by the number of days in the observation period to get total hen-days, the denominator of the rate. Divide the number of eggs actually collected by that hen-days figure, then multiply by 100 to convert the result into a percentage. A higher percentage means the flock is laying closer to one egg per hen per day on average over that period.
Examples
Default Week: 35 Eggs, 6 Hens, 7 Days
Collecting 35 eggs from 6 hens over 7 days gives 42 hen-days. Dividing 35 by 42 and converting to a percentage gives a hen-day production rate of about 83.3%.
Slower Week: 20 Eggs, 5 Hens, 7 Days
Collecting only 20 eggs from 5 hens over the same 7-day period gives 35 hen-days. That works out to a lower hen-day production rate of about 57.1%, a pattern that could reflect molting, shorter daylight, or a flock health issue.

Edge Cases to Watch For
- Number of hens and number of days must both be greater than zero; either being zero returns an error instead of a rate.
- The formula treats every hen entered as a layer; if the count includes roosters, young pullets not yet laying, or hens past their prime, the resulting rate will read lower than the true production rate of hens that are actually laying.
- A rate above 100% isn't possible under normal conditions, since it would require more eggs than hen-days observed, and would point to a data entry error, such as too few hens or days entered relative to the eggs collected.
