About the Class Rank Percentile
The Class Rank Percentile Calculator converts a class rank, such as 15th out of 200, into a percentile figure that is easier to interpret on its own and to compare across schools of different sizes. It is commonly used by students preparing college applications, since many admissions forms ask for percentile standing rather than a raw rank number.
How It Works
You enter a student's numeric class rank and the total class size. The calculator computes what percentage of the class the student outperformed, and separately reports what percentage of the class sits above the student (their top-percent standing).
Formula & Methodology
Because rank 1 is defined as the top of the class, subtracting rank from class size gives the count of students ranked below that position. Dividing by class size converts that count into the fraction of the class outperformed, and multiplying by 100 expresses it as a percentile. The complementary top-percent figure is simply rank divided by class size, showing the more familiar 'top X%' framing used on many transcripts.
Examples
Mid-size graduating class
A student ranked 15th out of a class of 200 has a percentile of ((200-15)/200) x 100 = 92.5th percentile, and sits in the top 7.5% of their class.
Small honors cohort
A student ranked 3rd out of 40 has a percentile of ((40-3)/40) x 100 = 92.5th percentile as well, despite a very different raw rank, and is in the top 7.5% of that smaller class.
