About the Commute Buffer
The Class Commute Time Buffer Calculator works out when to leave home to reliably reach class on time, factoring in a percentage-based delay buffer on top of typical travel time. It is designed for students planning their departure time around variable traffic, parking, or transit delays rather than assuming a commute always takes exactly as long as expected.
How It Works
You enter your typical travel time in minutes, a delay buffer as a percentage of that travel time to cover traffic or transit variability, and how many minutes before class starts you want to arrive. The calculator inflates the travel time by the buffer percentage, then adds the desired early-arrival minutes to produce the total lead time to build into your departure.
Formula & Methodology
By hand: convert the buffer percentage to a decimal and multiply it by the typical travel time to find the extra minutes of cushion, then add that cushion back to the base travel time to get buffered travel time. Add the number of minutes you want to arrive before class starts to get the total number of minutes before class you should leave.
Examples
Typical drive to campus
A 25-minute drive with a 20% delay buffer and a desire to arrive 5 minutes early gives buffered travel time of 25 x 1.20 = 30 minutes, plus the 5-minute early arrival, for a total lead time of 35 minutes before class.
Longer transit commute with a bigger buffer
A 45-minute bus commute with a 40% buffer for unreliable service, and no extra early-arrival cushion, gives buffered travel time of 45 x 1.40 = 63 minutes, so the student should leave 63 minutes before class starts.

Edge Cases to Watch For
- A buffer percentage of 0 returns the buffered travel time equal to the raw travel time, effectively disabling the buffer.
- The calculator does not account for one-time delays like finding parking on an unusually busy day; it only scales the buffer proportionally to normal travel time.
- Very short commutes with a large buffer percentage can still result in only a few added minutes, since the buffer is a percentage of a small base number rather than a fixed minimum cushion.
