About the Crown Molding
Crown molding runs the same perimeter as baseboard, but it needs a noticeably higher waste allowance, since every corner requires a compound miter cut on an angled profile instead of a simple flat cut.
How It Works
The calculator finds the room's perimeter from length and width, adds a waste allowance for miter cuts, and divides by the length of a single molding piece to estimate how many to buy.
Examples
A standard room
A 14×12 ft room has a 52 ft perimeter; with 15% waste that's about 59.8 ft of crown molding, or 8 pieces of 8 ft stock.
Using longer stock
The same room using 12 ft pieces instead of 8 ft needs only 5 pieces, reducing the number of seams along long wall runs.

Edge Cases to Watch For
- Crown molding's default 15% waste allowance is higher than baseboard's typical 10%, because compound miters on an angled profile are harder to get right on the first cut and often need a practice piece or two.
- Inside corners on crown molding are frequently coped (cut to fit the profile of the adjoining piece) rather than mitered, which is more forgiving of small angle errors but takes more time and skill to execute.
- Rooms with more than four corners, or out-of-square corners (common in older homes), increase both the waste percentage needed and the number of individual cuts required.
