About the Power-to-Weight Ratio
The Cycling Power-to-Weight Ratio Calculator converts your power output in watts and body weight in kilograms into watts per kilogram, the standard metric cyclists and coaches use to judge climbing potential. Two riders can produce the same absolute wattage and still climb very differently once body mass is factored in, which is why W/kg rather than raw power is used to compare climbers. The calculator also places your result into a rough performance category, from recreational rider up to world-class professional.
How It Works
Enter your power output in watts, typically a sustained figure like FTP rather than a short sprint peak, and your body weight in kilograms. The calculator divides power by weight to produce watts per kilogram, then compares that ratio against a set of fixed thresholds to label an approximate riding category, from 'Untrained / recreational' at the low end up to 'World-class / professional' at 5.5 W/kg and above.
Formula & Methodology
The category label is assigned by checking the ratio against six threshold bands in order: 5.5 W/kg and above is World-class / professional, 4.5 up to 5.5 is Category 1 racer, 4.0 up to 4.5 is Category 2-3 racer, 3.2 up to 4.0 is Category 4-5 racer / strong amateur, 2.5 up to 3.2 is Trained cyclist, and anything below 2.5 is Untrained / recreational.
Examples
Strong Amateur
A rider holds 250 watts at a body weight of 70 kg. That's 250 / 70 = 3.57 W/kg, which falls into the 'Category 4-5 racer / strong amateur' band.
Pro-Level Climber
A rider holds 400 watts at 65 kg. That's 400 / 65 = 6.15 W/kg, which clears the 5.5 W/kg threshold and is labeled 'World-class / professional'.
