About the Cylindrical Aquarium Volume
The Cylindrical & Bowfront Aquarium Volume Calculator finds the water volume, in gallons, of a round or bowfront-style fish tank. Standard rectangular-tank volume formulas don't apply to these shapes, since a circular cross-section holds a different amount of water than a box with the same footprint, so this tool applies the correct geometry instead of a rough approximation.
How It Works
Enter the tank's diameter and the water height, both in inches. The calculator treats the tank as a cylinder: it halves the diameter to get the radius, computes the circular cross-sectional area, and multiplies by water height to get volume in cubic inches, then converts that figure to gallons.
Formula & Methodology
By hand: halve the diameter to get the radius, square that radius, and multiply by pi (approximately 3.14159) to get the circular cross-sectional area in square inches. Multiply that area by the water height in inches to get volume in cubic inches. Divide the result by 231, the number of cubic inches in one US gallon, to convert to gallons.
Examples
16-Inch Diameter Tank Filled to 18 Inches
A tank with a 16 in diameter filled to an 18 in water height has an 8 in radius. The volume works out to about 3,619 cubic inches, which converts to roughly 15.7 gallons.
Smaller 12-Inch Bowfront at 24 Inches
A narrower 12 in diameter tank filled to 24 in of water height has a 6 in radius. That gives a volume of about 2,714 cubic inches, or roughly 11.8 gallons, less than the wider, shorter tank despite the taller water column.
