About the Diet Carbon Footprint
This calculator estimates the carbon footprint of your weekly diet by counting how many meals you eat in three categories: beef, chicken or pork, and vegetarian or vegan. It is meant for anyone curious how their current eating pattern compares to a more plant-forward one, using published per-meal emissions figures rather than a single blended diet label.
How It Works
You enter how many beef meals, chicken or pork meals, and vegetarian or vegan meals you eat in a typical week. The calculator multiplies each meal count by a fixed average CO2e figure for that category and adds the three totals together to get a weekly footprint, then scales that weekly number up to an annual figure in metric tons.
Formula & Methodology
The per-meal figures are drawn from published global average food-emissions research, reflecting the fact that beef carries a far larger footprint per meal than chicken, pork, or plant-based meals mainly because of methane produced during cattle digestion and the land and feed required per meal. Because each category uses one flat number, the result is a directional comparison between diet patterns rather than a precise personal audit.

Typical Mixed Diet
Three beef meals, five chicken or pork meals, and thirteen vegetarian meals a week works out to 20.9 kg CO2e weekly, or about 1.09 metric tons a year.
Plant-Forward Week
Cutting beef out entirely with seven chicken or pork meals and fourteen vegetarian meals a week comes to 13.3 kg CO2e weekly, or about 0.69 metric tons a year, a reduction driven almost entirely by removing the beef category.

Edge Cases to Watch For
- The three meal counts do not need to add up to 21 (three meals a day for seven days); the calculator does not check or require a fixed total, so a week with unlogged meals will understate your actual footprint.
- Fish, eggs, and dairy-heavy vegetarian meals are folded into the single 'vegetarian or vegan' category at its lowest average factor, which can modestly understate meals built around cheese or other high-footprint dairy.
- Portion size, specific cuts, and sourcing are not factored in; a small beef meal and a large one are both counted at the same 3.3 kg figure.
