About the DOTS Score

The DOTS Score Calculator computes the bodyweight-adjusted score USA Powerlifting and other federations use to compare lifters across different weight classes on a single scale. Since a heavier lifter can move more absolute weight without necessarily being 'stronger' relative to body size, DOTS converts a raw total into a normalized score for fair cross-class comparison.

How It Works

You select sex, then enter bodyweight in kilograms and total weight lifted in kilograms. The calculator plugs bodyweight into a fourth-degree polynomial (different coefficients for men and women) to get a denominator value, divides 500 by that denominator to get a coefficient, and multiplies the coefficient by the total to produce the final DOTS score.

Formula & Methodology

Take bodyweight in kilograms and raise it to the first through fourth powers, multiplying each by its respective coefficient from the male or female polynomial, then sum the terms including the constant. That sum is the denominator. Divide 500 by the denominator to get a per-lifter coefficient, then multiply the total kilograms lifted (squat plus bench plus deadlift, or whichever total is being scored) by that coefficient to arrive at the DOTS score.

Examples

83 kg male lifter

A male lifter weighing 83 kg with a 500 kg total gets a denominator of roughly 500.6 from the male polynomial, yielding a coefficient near 0.9988 and a DOTS score of about 499.4.

63 kg female lifter

A female lifter weighing 63 kg with a 300 kg total plugs into the female polynomial to get a denominator, producing a coefficient that is multiplied by 300 to yield her DOTS score, letting her total be compared directly against lifters in other weight classes.
