How It Works

You enter the number of windows, their average size, your area's annual heating degree days, your heating fuel cost, and your heating system's efficiency. The calculator computes your total window area, then applies a heat-loss formula using standard U-values for single-pane and double-pane glass, converts the difference in heat loss into fuel needed, and prices that fuel.

Total window area = window count x average size. Heat loss = area x U-value x heating degree days x 24. BTU saved = heat loss at single-pane U-value (1.04) minus heat loss at double-pane U-value (0.48). Therms saved = BTU saved / 100,000 / efficiency. Dollars saved = therms saved x fuel cost.
