About the Downspout Calculator
A gutter system's downspouts need enough combined drainage capacity to keep up with the roof area feeding them, or water backs up and overflows the gutter during a heavy storm.
How It Works
The calculator divides your roof's total drainage area by the rated capacity of your chosen downspout size, using common rule-of-thumb figures of about 600 sq ft for a 2×3 inch downspout and 1,200 sq ft for a 3×4 inch downspout.
Examples
A typical house
A 1,800 sq ft roof drainage area using 2×3 in downspouts (600 sq ft capacity each) needs about 3 downspouts.
Using larger downspouts
The same roof area with 3×4 in downspouts needs only about 2, since each one handles double the drainage capacity.

Edge Cases to Watch For
- These are general rule-of-thumb capacities - actual required capacity depends on local rainfall intensity, so regions with frequent heavy downpours may need more or larger downspouts than a dry climate would for the same roof area.
- Downspouts are typically spaced no more than about 35-40 ft apart along a gutter run, which can require more downspouts than the raw capacity calculation alone if the roofline is long and narrow.
- A roof's drainage area is the area feeding a specific gutter run, not the whole roof footprint - complex rooflines need each drainage section calculated separately.
