About the Drywall Calculator
Drywall comes in standard sheet sizes, and figuring out how many sheets a room needs means dividing total wall area by sheet size - with enough extra to cover the cuts around doors, windows, and corners.
How It Works
The calculator divides your total wall or ceiling area by the chosen sheet size, then adds your waste allowance percentage to account for trim losses.
Examples
A standard bedroom
500 sq ft of wall and ceiling area with 4×8 ft sheets (32 sq ft each) and 10% waste needs about 16 sheets.
Using larger sheets
The same 500 sq ft with 4×12 ft sheets (48 sq ft each) needs only about 11-12 sheets, though larger sheets are heavier and harder to handle solo.

- Sheets can crack or get damaged during transport and handling, which is part of why the standard waste allowance runs higher than the actual cutting waste alone.
