How It Works
You enter your annual carbon footprint in tons of CO2 and select a diet category from vegan to meat heavy. The calculator multiplies your carbon figure by a diet factor, since food choices shift the estimate, converts the adjusted footprint into global hectares using a fixed land use ratio, then divides that by the biocapacity available per person worldwide to produce an 'Earths needed' figure.

Default High Footprint Scenario
At a 16 ton annual carbon footprint and an average diet, the adjusted footprint stays at 16 tons, which converts to about 2.9 global hectares and works out to roughly 1.8 Earths needed if everyone lived the same way.
Lower Footprint, Vegan Diet
At an 8 ton carbon footprint with a vegan diet applying a 0.7 factor, the adjusted footprint drops to 5.6 tons, or about 1.0 global hectares, which comes out to roughly 0.6 Earths needed, below the average share.
