About the ERA Calculator
The ERA Calculator computes a pitcher's Earned Run Average, the standard baseball metric for how many earned runs a pitcher allows per nine innings. It is used to compare pitchers who have thrown different total innings on a common, game-length basis.
How It Works
You enter earned runs allowed and innings pitched, with partial innings entered as decimals (one out equals .33, two outs equals .67). The calculator divides earned runs by innings pitched, then multiplies by nine to scale the rate to a full nine-inning game, giving the ERA figure.
Formula & Methodology
Divide total earned runs allowed by total innings pitched to get earned runs per inning. Multiply that rate by 9, the number of innings in a standard game, to convert it into earned runs per nine innings, which is the conventional unit ERA is reported in. The result is rounded to two decimal places.
Examples
Full-season starter
A starting pitcher allows 28 earned runs over 72 innings pitched. ERA = (28 / 72) x 9 = 3.50.
Reliever with partial innings
A reliever allows 10 earned runs over 15.2 innings pitched (entered as 15.67). ERA = (10 / 15.67) x 9 = about 5.74.

Common Mistakes

Edge Cases to Watch For
- Innings pitched must be greater than zero, or the calculator returns an error since dividing by zero is undefined
- Partial innings need to be entered in baseball's specific decimal notation (.33 for one out, .67 for two outs), not true decimal thirds, since that is the convention the tool's help text specifies
- The calculator only counts earned runs, so unearned runs resulting from fielding errors are excluded by definition and must be filtered out before entering the earned run total
