About the E-Waste Recycling Value
The E-Waste Recycling Value Calculator estimates the raw material value of the gold, silver, and copper recoverable from recycling old smartphones, based on current metal prices. It's meant to put a rough dollar figure on the precious metals locked inside a phone you might otherwise throw away, using published average material content per device.
How It Works
You enter the number of phones being recycled along with the current market price of gold and silver per gram. The calculator applies fixed per-phone material weights for gold, silver, and copper, multiplies each by its respective metal price, and sums the three to give a total estimated recoverable value. Gold and silver prices are adjustable because they fluctuate with commodity markets, while copper's contribution is small enough per phone that the calculator keeps it fixed.
Formula & Methodology
Per phone, gold contributes 0.034 grams, silver 0.35 grams, and copper 16 grams, figures drawn from published e-waste material content research. Each is multiplied by its per-gram price and the three products are added together, then the whole sum is multiplied by the number of phones entered.

One phone at $65 per gram gold and $0.80 per gram silver yields about $2.21 from gold, $0.28 from silver, and $0.14 from copper, for a total estimated recoverable value of about $2.63.
Office e-waste collection
Recycling 250 old phones at $70 per gram gold and $0.90 per gram silver works out to roughly $2.84 in recoverable value per phone, or about $710 total across the batch.
