About the Exam Spacing Calculator
This calculator looks at a finals-week style schedule and shows how much study time is realistically available per exam, given a fixed total number of days and a set number of exams. It helps students see at a glance whether their exam schedule is spaced out comfortably or tightly packed.
How It Works
You enter the number of exams and the total number of days available before the last one. The calculator computes two figures: the average number of study days per exam, found by dividing total days by the number of exams, and the average number of days between consecutive exams, found by dividing total days by the number of gaps between exams (one fewer than the exam count).
Examples
Default four-exam finals week
With 4 exams over 10 total days, the average study days per exam is 10 / 4 = 2.5 days, while the average days between exams (across 3 gaps) is 10 / 3, about 3.3 days.
Two exams over a two-week window
With just 2 exams spread across 14 days, the average study days per exam is 14 / 2 = 7.0 days, and with only 1 gap between the two exams, the average days between exams is also 14.0 days.

Common Mistakes
- Assuming every exam should receive an identical share of study time, when in practice harder or higher-weighted exams usually warrant more.
- Confusing 'average days between exams' with 'average study days per exam', which are computed differently and answer different planning questions.
- Not adjusting the plan when exams are unevenly spaced in reality, since the calculator's outputs are averages across the whole window, not a day-by-day schedule.
Edge Cases to Watch For
- The number of exams is rounded to the nearest whole number and floored at a minimum of 1, since a fractional or zero exam count is not meaningful.
- The number of gaps between exams is floored at a minimum of 1, so even with only a single exam entered, the calculator still produces a defined 'days between' figure rather than dividing by zero.
- Both outputs are simple averages across the whole exam block; they assume study time is spread evenly and do not account for exams that fall on the very first or last day of the window differently.
