About the Remaining Exams Score Needed
This calculator works backward from a target final grade to tell you what average score you need to earn on everything that hasn't been graded yet. It's designed for the moment partway through a term when you know your current grade and want to know exactly how hard the remaining exams, papers, or quizzes need to be graded to hit a specific goal, whether that's a B+ overall or a scholarship-preserving 90%.
How It Works
You enter your current grade as a percentage, the share of the final grade that current work already represents, and the final percentage you're aiming for. The tool treats your remaining assignments as one combined block worth the leftover weight, then solves for the single average score that block would need to hit. The result tells you whether that average is realistic (0-100%), already locked in, or mathematically out of reach given how much weight is left.
Formula & Methodology
This is a rearrangement of the weighted-average definition: finalGrade = currentGrade x currentWeight + remainingAverage x remainingWeight. Since remainingWeight equals 1 minus currentWeight, solving for remainingAverage isolates the single unknown, the score still needed on the rest of the term's work.
Examples
Target Slipping Out of Reach
A student sits at an 82% average worth 60% of the final grade and wants to finish at 90% overall. Solving (90 - 82 x 0.6) / 0.4 gives a required average of 102% on the remaining work, which the calculator flags as not achievable.
A Realistic Stretch Goal
A student currently at 75%, with that grade representing 40% of the final total, wants to reach an 80% final grade. The calculator computes (80 - 75 x 0.4) / 0.6, or roughly 83.3%, as the average needed across the remaining 60% of coursework.
Advantages
- Converts a vague goal like wanting a B into a concrete number to aim for on upcoming assignments.
- Flags unrealistic targets early, before a student spends a semester chasing an average that's no longer mathematically possible.
- Works for any grading structure since the weight of remaining work is entered directly rather than assumed.
Common Mistakes
- Entering the weight of remaining work instead of the weight of grades already completed, which inverts the entire calculation.
- Forgetting to update the current grade percentage after a new assignment is graded, so the required average is based on stale numbers.
- Treating a "not achievable" result as final rather than as a signal that the overall target itself needs revisiting.
Edge Cases to Watch For
- If the weight of grades so far is entered as 100% or more, the tool returns an error, since there would be no remaining weight to solve for.
- When the required average comes out above 100%, the result is labeled "not achievable" rather than shown as an impossible percentage.
- When the required average works out negative, the target is already mathematically secured, so the calculator floors the result at 0%.
Common Use Cases
- Students checking whether a target letter grade is still within reach before a final exam.
- Advisors helping a student understand what a scholarship or GPA requirement actually demands from the rest of the term.
- Anyone deciding how to prioritize study time across classes based on how much ground is left to make up in each.
