About the Caulk Calculator
The Exterior Caulk Calculator estimates how many tubes of caulk you need to seal a given length of gaps around windows, doors, and trim, based on the total linear footage to be caulked and the width of bead you plan to run. It is built around the geometry of a caulk bead rather than a flat per-foot coverage number, since wider beads use dramatically more material per foot than narrow ones. How It Works
You enter the total linear feet you need to caulk and your bead width, commonly a quarter inch for standard trim gaps. The calculator models a standard tube's volume, treats the bead's cross-section as a square with sides equal to your bead width, and divides the tube's volume by that cross-sectional area to find how many linear feet one tube covers. Your total linear footage is then divided by that per-tube coverage figure and rounded up to a whole number of tubes.
Formula & Methodology
Because the bead is treated as a square cross-section, coverage per tube scales with the square of the bead width rather than in direct proportion to it. Doubling bead width from a quarter inch to a half inch quadruples the cross-sectional area, meaning a tube that once covered a given distance now covers only a quarter of it. This is why small increases in bead width shrink per-tube coverage far more sharply than intuition might suggest.
