About the Fascia Board
Fascia board runs the full length of a roofline, along both the eaves and the rakes, and because it's directly exposed to weather and ice dams, it's one of the more commonly replaced exterior trim pieces on a house.
How It Works
The calculator takes your total roofline perimeter, adds a waste allowance for cuts and joints, and divides by the length of a single board to estimate how many pieces to buy.
Examples
A standard roofline
A 150 ft total roofline perimeter with 10% waste needs about 165 ft of fascia board, or about 11 pieces of 16 ft stock.
Using shorter stock
The same roofline using 12 ft pieces instead needs about 14 pieces, more joints but easier to handle and transport.
Advantages

Common Mistakes
- Measuring only the eave length and missing the rake sections
- Not accounting for the extra material used by angled cuts at gable ends
- Planning board joints mid-span instead of at a rafter tail where they're properly supported
Edge Cases to Watch For
- Roofline perimeter includes both the eaves (horizontal edges where gutters mount) and the rakes (sloped edges of a gable end) - measuring only the eaves undercounts the total length needed.
- Fascia at gable ends often needs angled cuts to match the roof pitch where it meets the ridge, which uses up more of each board than a straight eave run.
- Boards this long (commonly 16 ft) are harder to source without joints on a long roofline, so plan joint locations at rafter tails for proper support rather than mid-span.
