How It Works
You enter two totals covering the same time period and the same animal or group: total feed consumed and total weight gained. The calculator divides feed consumed by weight gained to produce a single ratio, expressed as X.XX to 1, where lower numbers mean less feed was needed per pound of gain.
Formula & Methodology
To calculate this manually, add up all feed consumed, in pounds or kilograms, matching whatever unit you use for weight gain, over your tracking period, then divide by the total weight gained over that same period. An FCR of 2.00 means it took 2 pounds of feed to produce 1 pound of gain. Because the formula is a straight division of two totals, the accuracy of the result depends entirely on how carefully feed intake and weight gain were measured and recorded over the period.
Examples
Broiler-Style Efficiency
400 lb of feed consumed against 200 lb of weight gain produces an FCR of 2.00 to 1, meaning 2 pounds of feed were used per pound of gain.
Cattle-Style Efficiency
850 lb of feed consumed against 100 lb of weight gain produces an FCR of 8.50 to 1, in line with the higher ratios typical of cattle production.

Common Mistakes

- Treating FCR as the only measure of profitability while ignoring feed cost per unit, since a slightly higher FCR on cheaper feed can still be more cost-effective
Edge Cases to Watch For
- Both feed consumed and weight gain must be greater than zero, the calculator returns an error rather than a ratio if either is missing or zero, which also means it can't represent a period where an animal lost weight.
- The ratio doesn't normalize for the length of the tracking period on its own, comparing an FCR calculated over 2 weeks to one calculated over 8 weeks isn't a like-for-like comparison unless the underlying totals cover comparable growth stages.
- Typical reference ranges differ enormously by species, broilers often run around 1.5-2.0 while cattle commonly run 6-10 or higher, so a single FCR number only means something in the context of the species and production system it came from.
- The calculation doesn't account for feed waste, spillage, or feed shared across multiple animals unless that's already excluded from the feed-consumed figure you enter.
