About the Fielding Percentage
The Fielding Percentage Calculator turns a baseball or softball defender's raw putouts, assists, and errors into the single ratio scouts and stat sheets use to describe defensive reliability. How It Works
You supply putouts, assists, and errors. The calculator adds all three together to get total fielding chances, then divides the successful plays (putouts plus assists) by that total. The result displays in the standard baseball format, a decimal with the leading zero dropped, such as .975 instead of 0.975.
Formula & Methodology
Start by summing all three inputs to find total chances, since every putout, assist, and error represents one opportunity where the fielder was involved in a play. Then take only the two outcomes counted as successes, putouts and assists, and divide that sum by total chances. The calculator will not compute a result if all three inputs are zero, since there is no chance to measure.
Examples
Middle infielder over a season
A shortstop logs 110 putouts, 220 assists, and 8 errors. Total chances equal 338, and (110 + 220) divided by 338 gives a fielding percentage of .977.
Catcher with a clean game
A catcher records 9 putouts, 1 assist, and 0 errors in a single game. With 10 total chances and no errors, the calculator returns a perfect 1.000.

Edge Cases to Watch For
- If putouts, assists, and errors are all entered as zero, the calculator returns an error asking for at least one fielding chance, since dividing by zero chances is undefined.
- A perfect fielder with zero errors always returns exactly 1.000, regardless of how many putouts or assists were recorded, which can make small sample sizes look misleadingly clean.
- The metric does not include a way to input plays a fielder simply failed to reach, so a limited-range player who never attempts risky plays can post a higher percentage than a rangier fielder who reaches more balls but commits more errors trying.
- Positions accumulate stats very differently, so comparing a first baseman's percentage (typically very high due to easy putouts) directly against a shortstop's is not an apples-to-apples read on defensive skill.
