About the Aquarium Lighting Duration
This calculator gives aquarium keepers a recommended daily lighting duration, or photoperiod, based on the type of tank they're running. Lighting needs differ significantly between a fish-only display, a planted tank, and a reef system, so the tool maps your tank type directly to a commonly cited hour range for that setup.
How It Works
You select your tank type from four categories: fish-only, lightly planted, heavily planted or high-tech, and reef or coral. The calculator returns a matched daily lighting duration range for that category, along with a note on why the range is what it is.

- There is no numeric input to validate; selecting a tank type always returns a defined range, with lightly planted as the fallback default.
- The reef/coral range is meant to be ramped gradually rather than switched on and off abruptly, which the flat hour range alone doesn't capture.
