Air travel is one of the more carbon-intensive things an individual can do, and the footprint varies more by where you sit than most travelers realize. This calculator turns a flight's distance, cabin class, and passenger count into an estimated CO2 total, useful for comparing routes, offsetting decisions, or simply understanding what a trip costs the atmosphere. It's built for a single flight leg rather than a full itinerary, so round trips and connections need to be entered separately.
How It Works
Enter the one-way flight distance in miles, choose economy, premium economy, or business/first class, and specify how many passengers are traveling together. The calculator multiplies distance by a fixed emissions rate per mile that depends on cabin class, since a business or first class seat occupies a larger share of the aircraft's cabin and is allocated more of its total fuel burn per person. That per-passenger figure is then multiplied by the number of travelers to produce a trip total, with the per-passenger amount shown alongside it.
