About the Peer Evaluation Grade
The Group Project Peer Evaluation Calculator models one common way instructors translate peer ratings into an individual grade: scaling the shared group grade by how classmates rated your contribution relative to the maximum possible score. It's useful for students who want to see, in advance, how a peer evaluation might affect their individual grade compared to the group grade everyone shares.
How It Works
You enter the group's overall project grade, the average score your peers gave you, and the maximum value on the scale peers used to rate you. The calculator divides your peer score by that maximum to produce a multiplier between 0 and 1, then multiplies the group grade by that multiplier to estimate an individual grade.
Formula & Methodology
If a group earns a 90% project grade and a student's average peer rating is 4.2 out of a possible 5, the multiplier is 4.2 / 5 = 0.84. Applying that multiplier to the group grade gives 90 x 0.84 = 75.6%, meaning the peer scores scaled the shared grade down by 16%. A peer score right at the scale maximum, 5 out of 5, would produce a multiplier of exactly 1.0, leaving the individual grade equal to the full group grade.

- Overlooking that the peer scale maximum itself varies by course, so a rating of 4 means something different on a 5-point scale versus a 10-point scale
Edge Cases to Watch For
- The peer scale maximum is floored at a minimum of 1, so an entry of zero or a negative number won't produce a division-by-zero error.
- This models only one grading approach among several - many instructors instead use peer evaluation as a flag for significant free-riding rather than a proportional multiplier on every student's grade.
- There's no floor built into the multiplier, so a very low peer score can pull the individual grade down substantially with no built-in minimum protection.
