About the Group Study Session Length
The Group Study Session Length Calculator estimates a reasonable total run time for a group study session based on how many topics need covering, how long each topic takes per person, and how much dedicated break time to build in. It helps study groups set a realistic end time before the session starts, rather than guessing or running indefinitely.
How It Works
You enter the number of topics to review, the minutes budgeted per topic, and the total break minutes you want across the whole session. The calculator multiplies topics by minutes per topic to get total content time, adds the break minutes on top, and converts the combined total from minutes into hours for an easy-to-read session length.
Formula & Methodology
For 5 topics at 12 minutes each, content time is 5 x 12 = 60 minutes. Adding 15 minutes of total break time brings the session to 75 minutes, which converts to 75 / 60 = 1.25 hours. Scale that up to 8 topics at 15 minutes each with 30 minutes of breaks, and content time becomes 8 x 15 = 120 minutes, plus 30 minutes of breaks for a 150-minute, or 2.5-hour, session.

- It doesn't account for topics that naturally take longer or shorter than the group's average per-topic estimate, so uneven topics should be budgeted with an adjusted average going in.
- There's no minimum or maximum session length enforced, so an unrealistic input like zero minutes per topic will return a session length driven entirely by break time.
