About the Hockey Save % / GAA
This calculator produces the two headline numbers used to judge a hockey goaltender's performance: save percentage and goals against average. Enter saves, shots faced, and minutes played, and it computes both figures the way they are reported in official league statistics.
How It Works
The calculator first checks that shots faced and minutes played are both greater than zero, since dividing by either would be meaningless. Goals against is derived as shots faced minus saves. Save percentage is saves divided by shots faced, displayed to three decimal places. Goals against average scales the goals allowed to a 60-minute game by multiplying goals against by 60 and dividing by minutes played.
Formula & Methodology
Take a goaltender who faced 30 shots and made 27 saves in a full 60-minute game. Goals against is 30 minus 27, or 3. Save percentage is 27 divided by 30, which rounds to .900. GAA is 3 goals times 60 minutes divided by 60 minutes played, which equals 3.00. If the same goaltender only played 40 minutes before being replaced, the goals-against count would be scaled up: 3 times 60 divided by 40 equals 4.50, reflecting a worse goals-against rate over a full game even with the same raw goal count.
Examples
Standard full game
A goalie faces 30 shots, makes 27 saves, and plays all 60 minutes. Save percentage comes out to .900 and GAA comes out to 3.00.
Short relief appearance
A backup goalie faces 12 shots, makes 11 saves, and plays only 25 minutes. Save percentage is 11/12, which rounds to .917, while GAA is (1 x 60) / 25, or 2.40.

- GAA is normalized to a 60-minute game regardless of how many minutes were actually played, so a strong short relief appearance can produce an unusually low or high GAA compared to save percentage alone.
