About the Energy Cost Per Sq Ft
This calculator turns a home's total annual energy cost into a per-square-foot figure, a normalized metric that makes it possible to compare energy efficiency across homes of different sizes. It's intended for homeowners benchmarking their own home's efficiency or comparing it to typical ranges.
How It Works
You enter the home's combined annual electricity and gas cost along with its square footage. The calculator divides cost by square footage to produce a dollars-per-square-foot-per-year figure, then labels that result against three built-in bands to give a quick efficiency read.
Formula & Methodology
The calculation itself is a single division, but its value comes from what it removes: raw dollar comparisons between homes are misleading because a larger home naturally costs more to heat and cool in absolute terms. Dividing by square footage strips out that size effect, so a 1,200 sq ft home and a 4,000 sq ft home can be compared on the same basis, and the same home can be tracked year over year even if its square footage never changes.

A 2,000 sq ft home with $2,400 in combined annual electricity and gas costs works out to $1.20/sq ft/yr, landing right at the boundary between 'Typical' and 'Above average - potential efficiency opportunity'.
Larger, efficient home
A 3,200 sq ft home spending $2,240 per year on energy comes out to $0.70/sq ft/yr, which falls under $0.80 and is labeled 'Efficient' despite spending less than the smaller home in the first example.
