About the Horse Water Intake
This calculator estimates a horse's daily water intake in gallons, combining body weight with adjustments for work level and hot weather. It is built around the standard equine guideline that water needs scale with body size and rise substantially with exertion and heat.
How It Works
You enter the horse's weight in pounds, then select a work level (maintenance, moderate, or heavy) and a weather condition (cool/mild or hot). The calculator computes a baseline water amount from weight alone, then multiplies that baseline by a work-level factor and a weather factor to produce the final daily estimate in gallons.
Formula & Methodology
The baseline rate is 0.75 gallons per 100 lb of body weight, so an 1100 lb horse has a baseline of (1100/100) x 0.75 = 8.25 gallons. That baseline is then scaled up by whichever work and weather multipliers apply: a horse in heavy work during hot weather multiplies the baseline by 1.7 x 1.3 = 2.21, meaning the two factors compound rather than simply adding together.

An 1100 lb horse at maintenance work and cool weather returns (1100/100) x 0.75 x 1 x 1 = 8.25 gallons per day.
Heavy work in hot weather
The same 1100 lb horse in heavy work during hot weather returns 8.25 x 1.7 x 1.3, which is about 18.2 gallons per day, more than double the maintenance figure.
